CROSS TO BEAR

{ Allen Walker of D.Gray-man }

FRIENDS

Here are the people on Allen's side, so to speak. In other words, they're friends and allies. Please see the foes section for information on Allen's ties with the Millennium Earl and the Noah clan.

TIMCAMPI

Allen seems to treasure Timcampi very much, and it does seem to have quite a personality for a mere golem. Although Timcampi is originally Cross's golem, it stays with Allen as a guide and as a companion when Cross leaves Allen behind in India with instructions to head to the Black Order on his own. Timcampi never usually strays far from Allen's side, but when it does, it occasionally gets itself eaten by cats or crushed to pieces by akuma. It's not really a worry since Timcampi can regenerate itself, and its awareness of danger often seems stronger than Allen's as Timcampi shows either by flying away from real threats or hiding itself inside Allen's clothing.

Timcampi can also be a source of comfort and strength to Allen. Allen has a poor sense of direction and tends to get lost easily, and when he feels anxious and alone after being separated from Kanda on his first mission, Timcampi seems to pick up on Allen's worries and chomps its way through a brick wall to get to him. Later on in the story, when Allen nearly gives up hope during his battle with Tyki, Timcampi keeps biting him as if to knock some sense into Allen's skull, and its efforts actually seem to work.

Other than that its main uses of detecting its master and its recording ability, Timcampi usually attends to Allen by performing mundane little duties like hovering beside him with a towel while Allen washes his face or just generally cheering him up when he's feeling down.

Hey, every magical girl needs a cutesy mascot character. What could be more adorable than Allen getting his head gnawed on by a golden snitch with fangs?

MIRANDA

Miranda, a grade A klutz, found her life being completely transformed after meeting Allen. Unable to do anything properly or even just keep up with other people, Miranda was always left behind and abandoned despite being a genuinely kind and caring woman. Although she's initially reluctant to help Allen with his investigation when he visits the town that keeps rewinding itself, and even more reluctant to believe Rinali when she suggests that she could be a host to Innocence, Miranda ends up invoking said Innocence to protect Allen. Had she been alone when Rhode attacked, Miranda might never have fought back, but it's because Allen goes out of his way to save her even though he himself is already hurt, that Miranda makes her decision. She knows she can't do anything and doesn't understand why she shields him, but it's her desire to protect Allen and to keep trying that gives her the power to temporarily turn back time.

It's because of Miranda and the ability of her Innocence that Allen's time is sucked away from him and 'heals' the injuries he's suffered in the process. She's always strived to be acknowledged for being useful in some way and she finally gets her recognition when Allen gives thanks for what she's done. Miranda is reduced to tears by the words she's longed to hear her whole life and makes her all the more determined to she is to do her best now that she's found something she can do, and do well.

Even when the battle is over and the danger is passed, Miranda continues to keep her Innocence invoked. It's causing her great distress but she refuses to let time return to normal, which would mean allowing Allen and Rinali to get hurt all over again. Allen assures her that it'll be okay and that all wounds heal with time, and so Miranda respects his wishes by doing as he says.

Miranda changes for the better and becomes much more positive as a result. She even joins the Black Order to become an exorcist, and while Miranda cares for and worries about all her comrades, Allen will always have a special place in her heart.

LAVI

Lavi is one of the few people who doesn't seem to care about Allen's curse or past and just sees him for who he is, rather than what he is. Lavi is considerably more carefree and good-natured than Allen, and although he does say some very mature things on occasion, he behaves like more of a kid despite being Allen's elder by three years.

Lavi is a good person for Allen to be around. He does tease him and poke fun at him (which he does to everyone, even his master), but he's also great for pulling Allen out of his depression. Allen doesn't seem to know how to understand or react to Lavi at first. Lavi is unlike him in that he's always joking and being completely shameless and uninformal by assigning silly and inappropriate nicknames to whoever he meets, but it's entirely because Lavi is so approachable and likeable that Allen starts to open up to him.

Allen is serious. Lavi is not. He also tends to be the leader while Allen is the follower and usually drags the poor boy into whatever mess he's managed to create (like the two of them wrecking a hospital after travelling by hammer and getting beaten up by Bookman). They make a good team and watch each other's back when fighting side by side, although Lavi can't resist giving into his childish urges and doing things such as doodling all over Allen's face while he's asleep.

In short, Lavi grows to become quite fond of Allen. He cares deeply for all his friends which is why he gets so angry and emotional when he meets Tyki and is determined to get revenge on Allen's behalf. Even when they meet again, Lavi feels unnerved by Allen's determination to defeat the Noah clan, rather than being inspired by it. "Your feelings are so strong, you're almost dazzling, Allen. What are you carrying upon your shoulders, along with that clownish innocence? It's as if like the light... you're going to disappear..."

KRORY

Like Miranda, Allen is the one who inspires Krory to become an exorcist. He understands all too well the way Krory feels after killing Eliade but, rather than letting him give in to his despair, Allen tells Krory that he has a reason to keep on living, and that reason is to destroy the akuma and freeing the human souls trapped within them.

Krory's usual personality is considerably different compared to when his Innocence is invoked, and he can be rather meek and naive. Krory has no idea what the real world is like after having spent all his life shut inside his grandfather's castle, and it's his unawareness that gets him suckered into a poker match with a disguised Tyki. Krory loses miserably of course, and it's up to Allen to save his clothing and what's left of his dignity by taking Krory's place and winning his belongings back (showing off his l33t cheating skillz in the process).

The other connection Krory and Allen share apart from being parasitic-type hosts to Innocence who tragically lost their most precious people, is Cross. The general 'predicted' Allen's arrival after he visited Krory to return a plant pot he'd once borrowed, a pot Allen remembers all too well as housing one of the baby man-eating plants from Grandpa Krory's impressive collection.

Allen is the first person to accept Krory, along with Lavi, and this acceptance means a lot to him. He's only ever fought to protect himself before, but now he feels that he has to fight for Allen and the sake of the other exorcists, that he has to give it his all so he can protect them.

KANDA

Kanda and Allen got off to a pretty explosive start when Allen first arrived at the Order. Thanks to Komui's complete and utter lack of organisation, Allen was mistaken as an intruder and Kanda was dispatched to take care of him (and by take care of, I mean kill first, ask questions later). Even when the misunderstanding was cleared up, Kanda had no intention of being friendly or even civil towards Allen, refusing to shake his hand simply because he was cursed. Their next meeting wasn't much better when Allen stepped in to an argument that didn't concern him to keep Kanda from strangling one of the Finders and telling him to mind his attitude, and Komui made the situation even worse by teaming the pair of them up right off the bat for Allen's first mission.

Despite stating flat out that he won't bother helping Allen and would even leave him behind to die if it was for the sake of completing his mission, Kanda ends up saving his life anyway. He's disgusted by Allen's soft-hearted ways and refusal to accept that casualties are always part and parcel of war, but Allen surprises him by being as tenacious as he is determined, and it's Allen's strength of will that leaves Kanda to finally respect his desire to protect Lala and Guzoru. Instead of just taking the doll's Innocence, he lets Allen watch over her until she expires. He even shows some measure of concern in his own Kanda-like way by telling Allen to stop Lala singing and extract her Innocence rather than prolonging his own suffering, but Allen sees his promise through to the end by letting Lala sing until she breaks.

It isn't something that endears Allen to Kanda in any way but he does learn that, although Allen will probably never allow any sacrifices as long as he can help it, he can at least keep his promises (and Kanda states all too clearly how much he loathes people who are incapable of doing that).

Kanda and Allen have a very unique relationship in the way they both affect each other. It's interesting how Kanda, who doesn't even know the meaning of the words sense of humour, can make such delightful and hilarious expressions when he's around Allen. It's the same with Allen, who rarely loses his temper, and yet all it takes is a glance or a smirk from Kanda to piss him off. It's like Kanda takes a perverse kind of pleasure from making Allen angry, and the nickname of Bean Sprout that he gives him sticks, much to Allen's annoyance and frustration. Their beautiful reunion at the Noah's Ark is equally memorable, if only for the two of them threatening to shave each other's heads.

KOMUI

While Komui is usually in the story for comic relief, he does takes his duties very seriously. He feels a certain amount of responsibility for being the one to put the lives of the exorcists in danger, although he, like everybody else, takes a special interest in Allen. Komui is the one who fixes Allen's arm for him (albeit in an extremely trauma-inducing way) and he looks out for him like an older brother (when he isn't shooting Allen with blowdarts in order to keep him from destroying his precious Komurins).

Because Allen is a good boy who was raised to be polite to his elders, he does respect Komui as his superior. He isn't always obedient, however, as he shows when he prepares to board the Noah's Ark whether Komui will let him or not. Komui cares for all the people he works with, but he seems to have a soft spot for Allen. When Allen gets too immersed in dark thoughts about the war, Komui is the one to lift him out of them by telling him not to think about the bad things that are happening around him but the fun things that he'll do when he gets home. It's this that gives Allen strength, and he repeatedly vows never to give up. He tells Rinali that they and everybody else will return safely to the Order, and then they do, he's going to eat every single dish he can get Jerry to cook for him. ^^;;

RINALI

Rinali is the second person Allen meets upon arriving at the Order and is considerably more friendly and approachable towards him than Kanda. Rinali values her relationships with other people very highly, which is why she prevents Allen from trying to rescue the akuma Rhode orders to self-destruct. She slaps Allen when he gets angry with her and tells him that she held him back from getting hurt because he was her friend, and it takes her a while to forgive him for his recklessness.

Rinali always seems to be worrying about Allen, and with good reason. He does have a talent for getting himself into trouble, not to mention he places more priority on saving others than he does on his own life. Rinali doesn't want Allen to disappear but she's also incapable of protecting him while she's busy fighting the darkness in her own heart. Even Allen comments that she isn't the strong Rinali he knows, but she can't deal with her Innocence. She's uneasy, afraid and insecure, and she needs constant reassurance from Allen just to keep walking forward. He's more than willing to protect her, like he's determined to protect all the people he holds precious, letting Rinali draw much-needed strength from him when she needs it.
